PROBLEM STATEMENT:
In Tanzania the lack of separate toilets for girls and boys is among the top barriers to girls’ education. When a girl reaches puberty, access to a separate toilet can be the decisive factor of whether she continues with her education. When girls are menstruating they need access to a water point and to have a place where they can change their pads. Furthermore, lack of separate and adequate sanitation and Washing facilities for adolescent girls discourages them from school due to failure of meeting hygiene needs during menstruation which in turn affects their performance and increase school dropping out.
ABOUT THE PROJECT:
We are working to construct Ventilated girl friendly Latrine for rural schools in Mwanza. By Building latrines in schools, children won't have to defecate in the open or walk to the nearest forests or communal toilets. This will help to mitigate the spread of diseases and to create a healthier environment for learning at school.
Clean and safe latrine is a pre-requisite for health, dignity, privacy, and education. Providing hygiene and sanitation facilities in rural schools creates an enabling school environment and children's regularity to school will be improved, awareness of hygiene and sanitation will increase and children will have fewer illnesses due to water borne infections.
In the long term the project works to reduce dropout rates especially among girls in primary and secondary schools. Young women won’t have to miss school days during the weeks that they have their menstrual periods. Children will grow up with the privacy of closing the door while they use the restroom. Overall hygiene of a community will also increase as the community will be educated on how to properly wash hands after using the toilet or how to treat diarrheal diseases.
