PROBLEM STATEMENT:

In Mwanza slums of Northern Tanzania, water sanitation and hygiene situation is very poor whereas 84% of schools had No water for hand washing and 38% of schools had No Water supply. Children in Mwanza slum schools are regularly exposed to unsafe WASH facilities and lack the basic education on practicing of hand washing.
This critical shortage explains continued existence of diseases including COVID-19, diarrhea, worms and dysentery which are all linked to inadequate access to water supply, improper sanitation and unhygienic behavior.
In Mwanza slums, Disease statistics indicates that 60-80% of the diseases requiring hospital attendance for children are those related to poor Sanitation of which could be prevented with good water quality and sanitation. These diseases NOT only affect children physical development but also school attendance and academic performance.
MAJI TAP PROJECT.
Maji Tap Project works to provide expertise and Interventions aimed at saving lives and reducing illness in remote schools by improving access to healthy and safe water, adequate Sanitation and Improved Hygiene. We are manufacturing environmentally friendly hand washing station powered by foot pedals (tippy taps) for filtered water and liquid soap, decreasing contamination and improving access to healthy and safe water. The system is designed for low resource settings, is easily maintained and affordable.  We are coupling this initiative with manufacture and supply of much in need hygiene kits (sanitizers and liquid soaps) and create awareness on proper hand washing techniques using info-graphics prepared in native Swahili language.
This project has been able to install 130 hands washing stations (tippy taps) across 30 schools in Tanzania impacting more than 15,500 school children to access clean water and improved sanitation and attend school regularly.
